'Bee space' refers to the specific distance (approximately 3/8 of an inch) that bees will maintain between structures in their hive; this spacing is critical as it allows bees to pass freely without the risk of blocking their movement with propolis or wax. By incorporating this principle into his hive design, Langstroth created a system that not only made hive management easier but also improved honey production and bee health.

His innovation led to widespread adoption of movable frame hives, which allows beekeepers to remove individual frames for inspection or harvesting, fundamentally changing the practice of beekeeping.
